Overcoming Opioid Addiction in Montana
The conference addressed how the state’s opioid epidemic is impacting communities in Montana.
At the one-day conference, several federal and state agencies discussed ways to prevent and improve the rising opioid epidemic. Bobbi Perkins of the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services Chemical Dependency Bureau says primary care providers and chemical dependency treatment providers should partner to treat individuals using a holistic approach. This treatment method focuses on improving the health of the whole person, rather than just on symptoms associated with addiction. For instance, addicts who also suffer from co-occurring disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder can benefit from holistic treatment that improves their physical, mental, and emotional health.

District Court Judge Greg Pinski spoke at the conference to stress the importance of drug treatment court programs, saying these programs also exist to improve public safety. Pinski pointed out that drug court programs help save the state millions in costs that would otherwise be used to incarcerate drug offenders. Plus, drug court programs give addicts another chance at overcoming addiction and improving their lives.
