State Residents, Montana Rehab Centers Prepare For the Legalization of Medical Marijuana
Medical marijuana was re-legalized in the state of Montana on Election Day with the passing of Initiative 182, the Montana Medical Marijuana Initiative. Medical marijuana was first legalized in 2004, but became harder to obtain after 2011 when new laws restricted the state’s program and access to supply. Now that medical marijuana is legal once again, local residents and Montana rehab centers are braced for the changes the new law could have on communities and people susceptible to addiction.

Changes to Montana’s Medical Marijuana Law
Before the passing of Initiative 182, medical marijuana businesses and doctors who recommended the substance to more than 25 patients per year were subject to warrantless inspections from the state Board of Examiners. Under the new law, medical marijuana facilities are no longer subject to these inspections, and only required to receive one annual inspection by the state. Additionally, medical marijuana facilities can serve more than three patients at once, and can hire employees to grow, dispense, and transport medical marijuana.
Initiative 182 also allows individuals who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder to gain access to medical marijuana as a form of treatment. The new law will go into effect in Montana on June 30, 2017.
Treating Marijuana Use Disorder at Rehab Centers
Increased access to medical marijuana in Montana could lead to rising addiction rates statewide, along with more patient admissions to drug rehab centers that treat marijuana use disorder. Heavy marijuana use and addiction can interfere with a person’s overall quality of life, and lead to impaired school or work performance, depression and anxiety, and the use of more dangerous, addictive drugs. When medical marijuana is not used responsibly, users risk facing addiction, financial hardships, and other problems that can impact their livelihood.
Drug rehab centers that treat marijuana use disorder offer therapies that help patients flush and detox active marijuana ingredient THC from their bodies. These treatments may involve the use of medications, exercise, and/or nutrition — all of which have been proven effective at helping patients achieve sobriety and stay clean long-term following rehab.
At marijuana rehab centers, patients can learn new hobbies and interests that replace marijuana use and that promote a healthier, more fulfilling lifestyle. Patients also learn the skills needed to cope with stress naturally using methods such as yoga and meditation, and to avoid relapsing during difficult times. Patients also benefit from counseling and therapy that uncover and address the primary causes of addiction.
