State Works With New CDC Guidelines, Montana Drug Rehab Centers to Improve Opioid Addiction Problem
In an effort to improve the country’s opioid addiction crisis, the CDC released new guidelines for the prescribing of opioid painkillers for chronic pain. Montana recently joined 35 other states to support the implementation of these guidelines, which will help physicians identify when patients are at risk for opioid addiction.
The CDC’s guidelines, along with treatments available at Montana drug rehab centers, will help raise awareness about the opioid epidemic, and about the consequences associated with opioid use.

Examining Prescription Drug Abuse Rates in Montana
Montana Attorney General Tim Fox says he acknowledges that opioid painkillers are often needed to treat and relieve chronic pain, but that steps must be taken to prevent addiction. According to Fox, the state ranks third in prescription painkiller abuse among youth in the U.S., which is why the state’s justice department has decided to move forward with endorsing the CDC’s new guidelines for prescribing opioids.
Fox adds that just over 5% of Montana teens and 16% of Montana high school students use prescription drugs that aren’t prescribed to them. In many instances, youth become addicted to unused painkillers they take from medicine cabinets at home, or that they purchase on the streets and at school from friends. Fox says the Montana Department of Justice will be working with doctors, pharmacists, and other prescribers to address the overprescribing of opioids.
Treating Prescription Drug Abuse at Montana Rehab Centers
Drug rehab centers not only help individuals overcome opioid addiction and dependence, but offer education courses that teach patients everything they need to know about addiction and staying clean after treatment. Rehab centers also offer counseling and therapy that address underlying causes of addiction, so patients can learn to avoid triggers that lead to substance abuse.
Patients can also receive treatment for co-occurring disorders associated with addiction, such as obsessive compulsive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder.
State-funded rehab centers usually treat opioid addiction using medication-assisted treatments. These treatments involve the use of medications that prevent patients from experiencing cravings and withdrawal symptoms when they stop using opioids. These FDA-approved medications, which include methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone, can help addicts overcome physical dependence on opioids so they can focus on becoming healthier and addiction-free.
Private and luxury rehab centers also offer medication-assisted treatments, as well as alternative holistic therapies that help patients achieve sobriety without the use of medications. Types of therapies offered at these rehab centers include massage and meditation, which are often integrated with other healthy living and recreational activities designed to promote overall wellness.
